#JusticeForBlessing: Unilorin Students pay tributes, hold candlelight procession

The University of Ilorin Student Union on the 9th of June held a candlelight procession to honour the memory of the slain student of the university, Olajide Blessing Omowumi who was reportedly raped, then murdered last week.

The procession started with a gathering at the institution’s Student Union Building, then followed by a walk through to the Faculty of Agriculture where candles were lit to pay the last tribute to the slain student.

The procession was rounded up at the school park with candles lit. Feflections on the deseased were made, followed by prayers.

The deceased’s sister, Dr Dupe Shittu while giving her remark, reiterated the need for justice to be served. She also prayed amidst tears that the perpetrators be brought to book.

In an interview with our correspondent, Dr Shittu mentioned that the details of the murder are still unclear and investigations are ongoing.

Barrister Anthonia Erinfolami Daniel, the President of the Kwara State Civil Society platform for sexual and gender based violence disclosed that investigations are ongoing and an autopsy has been carried out by the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. She affirmed that “different organisations even in and out of Kwara State” were following the case closely.

In his own remark, the current president od the student Union,Taofiq Waliu (Omoluabi), mentioned that the procession was organised to “create an iconic event to honour her”. He also added that the University is working closely with security operatives to ensure that justice is secured. He further assured that all hands are on deck to tighten the security situation on and off campus.

The procession had in attendance families and friends of the deceased, the Sub-Dean of the Student Affairs Unit; Dr Alex Akanmu and students and student union leaders of the University.

Olajide Blessing was a 300 level student of the Faculty of Agric before her death last week; she was reported to have been raped and murdered by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
