LSS Holds Webinar On Tech Law.

The leadership of the Law Students Society, Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin organised and held a webinar on a WhatsApp platform on the 17th of June, 2021 on the topic: Data Privacy and Protection Laws in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: The Legal Prospects and Challenges.

The event which was aimed at educating law students across the country on the prospects and challenges facing data privacy and protection laws in the age of artificial intelligence kicked off with the opening remarks from the President of the Law Students’ Society, University of Ilorin, Mr Ibrahim Ismail Mojisola after which the participants were asked to introduce themselves and materials were sent so the participants can have a general knowledge before the lectures start.

The session, which started around 7 pm was facilitated by Mr Gabriel Eze, an IT and blockchain laws expert who is an Associate at Infusion Lawyers and a member of the Policy and Regulations Committee at Stakeholders in Blockchain Technology Association of Nigeria (SIBAN). His entire speech was divided into three parts; what artificial intelligence denotes, its application in loan management and lastly, its legal prospects and challenges, particularly the National Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) 

He emphasised the role of Artificial Intelligence in our financial institutions when he said, “The better you can determine an individual’s creditworthiness, the more easily you can streamline the internal processes. Similarly, the quicker and less hassle a process is, the more appealing it is to customers,”

He continued to emphasise that AI can be as damaging as it is beneficial and ended the discussion by explaining how the use of machine learning will always going to raise privacy, ethical and legal issues.

The session which lasted for about three hours ended with a closing remark by the General Secretary of the Law Students Society, University of Ilorin, Mr Abdulazeez Shittu Akintide and in attendance were students from prestigious universities all over the country including the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, US an DanFodio University, Sokoto and Osun State University.
