In recognition of his sterling service and projects during his service year at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), a President’s Honours Award had been conferred on Abdulazeez Sodiq, an alumnus of the University of Ilorin.
In a letter dated the 6th of February, 2021, Mr. Abdulazeez, alongside other recipients of the award, was informed of his selection for the “NYSC’s President’s Honours Award, in recognition of the meritorious service he rendered to his fatherland.”
Abdulazeez, with NYSC State Code, PL/18C/0850, graduated with First Class honors in Marketing from the University of Ilorin and served at the Department of Marketing in the University of Jos, Jos-Nigeria.
During his service year, he donated a borehole project as his contribution to the development of his host community in Plateau State. He executed the project at Mal-Shida, Kunga Rigizah Community of Jos-North Local Government, which was commissioned on July 24th, 2019 by NYSC officials in the state.
Interacting with UCJ-UNILORIN, Abdulazeez stated that he never expected the award, because when he executed the project back in 2019, it was to support humanity.
In his words, “Kunga Rigizah, the community I executed the borehole project really suffered from paucity of water; they used to rely on River water, which is not healthy and they had to trek there for close to an hour. So I decided to mobilize fund by moving from shop to shop, street to street and also marketplaces.”
“Fortunately, the project improved the wellbeing of the community as it made them have access to potable water. It also improved their economic status through the availability of water to support their farming occupation. From a social perspective, the project reduced the ethnic-religious crisis in the community. This was achieved by siting the project at central point for both Hausa and Birom tribes thus, building social and peaceful integration between the two ethnic groups.”
Abdulazeez expressed that he felt emotionally fulfilled because he impacted on humanity positively and significantly, which is part of the probitas doctrina mantra that being an alumnus of the University of Ilorin imbibed in him.
The award, which has been conferred on Abdulazeez in person, was delivered to him at the NYSC Directorate Headquarters in the Nation’s capital city, Abuja, earlier this month.
