Student Legal Practitioners enjoined to uphold justice as Body of Benchers organizes for Call to Bar Ceremony

Student advocates have been charged to uphold fairness and justice to further the promotion of legal practice on campus. This call was made at the Call to Bar Ceremony organized by the Body of Benchers, University of Ilorin.

The Nigeria Bar Association – Young Lawyers Forum, Ilorin Branch Chairman, Ajedayo Zulqarnain, while delivering his presentation, emphasized the importance of justice and diligence in the legal profession, stating that the core emblems of practice would come in handy in the dispensation of services and client representation.

Mr. Ajedayo charged the new advocates to be steadfast, truthful, and diligent in their practice and should lift the scales of practice in the student legal jurisdiction. He emphasized that the promotion of legal practice, advocacy, and jurisprudence is key in ensuring the upliftment of legal practice in the jurisdiction.

The Chairman of the Body of Benchers and Chief Justice of the Students Union, Honourable Justice Muazzu Ola-Lawal Abolaji, highlighted the activities of the Benchers and reinstated the zeal of the body in the promotion of law and advocacy within the students’ community. He mentioned that the new inductees into the Bar have proven worthy of the role and that more has to be done in building stellar steps to upskill their advocacy skills. He enjoined the student advocates to be promoters and defenders of justice during their sojourn at the Bar.

The Attorney General of the Students Union, Abdul-Basit Mustapha Adetoyebi; the Chief Judge of the Law Students Society, Honourable Judge Tunji-Lawal Lawal Bolaji and the President of the Students Union Bar Association, Adedimeji Quayyim Abdul-Hafeez, amongst other stakeholders all implored the student advocates to further uplift the values of the Bar, as the organization is poised towards the advancement of their career prospects and paths. They stated that they are all up to a great start and that they should sustain the long legacies of exceptional student legal practice in the university community.

The event also witnessed the conferment of Advocates Okwara Lawrence Ogechukwu, Kolawole Islamiyat Oyindamola, and Akintola Abdul-Jalaal, to the rank of the Senior Advocates of the Union. Also, graduating-finalist holders of the rank, Advocates Abdul-Basit Adetoyebi Mustapha and Isiaka Azeez Ayinde were awarded for the service in promoting the laws and advocacy by the organization.

The Sub-Dean of the Student Affairs Unit, Dr. Alex Akanmu, implored the students to protect the image of the institution with their skills, and maintain the balance of the structure of the institution. The Sub-Dean also commended the Benchers for their roles in resolving and settling disputes and ensuring effective measures towards upholding the peace on campus.

The event witnessed the unveiling of the Student Union Court Rules by the Sub-Dean, after the detailed highlight of the innovations of the document by the Court Rules Review Committee Chair, Honourable Justice Erinle Usman Omopelumi. The ceremonies also included the formal oath-taking of the new inductees, which formally grants them membership into the Students Union Bar Association, University of Ilorin.
