The University of Ilorin Students’ Union Judicial Council has held its legal year ceremony on 5th December, 2019 at the Faculty of law’s moot court.
The legal year ceremony was held to officially commence the 2019/2020 academic session of the Judicial Council.
The Justices of the Students’ Union court as introduced by the moderator, Taofik Waliu are Hon. Chief Justice Azeez Opeyemi, Hon. Justice Dasuki Ahmad, Hon. Justice Ola Lawal, Hon. Justice Shomope Abdulrasheed, Hon. Justice Usman Omopelumi, Hon. Justice Mohammed Ridwan and Hon. Justice Alabi Kadijah, all fully dressed in wig and gown.
There was recognition of the members of the students’ union senate council present, the members of executive council present, judges of other faculties present, Lord advocates present, senior advocates present and other distinguished guests of honour. The Chief Justice of the students’ union court, Hon. Justice Azeez Opeyemi gave an opening remark on the ceremony.
Goodwill messages were received, including that of the Students’ Union president, Comrade Okoko Wisdom after which the guest lecture if the day, Dr. Lukman spoke on the theme: ” Judicial Activism; Towards Reflecting the Society”. He stated that the Judiciary, in exercising its power of interpretation, may employ Judicial activism to extend the law to cover issues not envisaged by the legislature.
The Chief Justice declared the legal year opened and mentioned that the service system is now fully operative after which a goodwill message was said by the Subdean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Alex Akanmu.
The Legal year ceremony came to a successful end with Photo sessions.
