Social media platforms before the era of facebook and the likes.

By: Adepoju Oluwatimilehin Samuel

Social media platform has been existing even before the invention of facebook. It is a platfom that enables users to communicate with other users. Here are the social media sites ( including tools like messengers) we once use.

*1. MYSPACE*
It was the space to be and people did love it there. It was the Facebook of that time and everyone wanted to be on it. We loved the polls, the bulletins, the swanky interest-related groups and of course, the ‘Top Friends’ feature signified the online clique of yours.

*2. Yahoo! Messenger*
This one has been easy to use and the most-used at the same time. It has the emoticon-talks, voice calls, chatting incessantly on it. The messenger was one of the most popular media site in the 90s. Yahoo! Messenger was provided free of charge and could be downloaded and used with a generic “Yahoo ID” which also allowed access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail. It was an advertisement supported instant messaging client and associated protocol provided by yahoo.

3. *Hi5*
The counts of hi5 and the messages that followed are missed. And, it was like a world within a world and steadily grew upon us. hi5 is a social networking site based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2004, it was reported to be the 2nd largest social network after Myspace by 2007. Hi5 had many typical social networking features, such as friend networks, photo sharing, user groups, and status updates.

4. *OKURT*
Orkut was one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil in 2008. It was designed to help users meet new and old friends and maintain existing relationships. The website was named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten. Orkut’s features and interface changed significantly with time. Initially, each member could become a fan of any of the friends in their list and also evaluate whether their friend is “Trustworthy”, “Cool”, “Sexy” on a scale of 1 to 3 (marked by icons), which was aggregated as a percentage. Google close orkut on september 30, 2014.

5 *. MSN*
It connected to the Microsoft Messenger service while also having (as of the final version) compatibility with Yahoo! Messenger and Facebook Messenger. The client was first released as MSN Messenger Service on July 22, 1999, and was marketed under the MSN branding until 2005 when it was rebranded under Windows Live and has since been officially known by its present name, although its previous name was still used colloquially by most of its users. In June 2009, Microsoft reported the service attracted over 330 million active users each month, placing Messenger among the most widely used instant messaging clients in the world.
All these and many more are social media website that enables the people of 90s to reach out to their loved ones.
