UniLAWrin hosts 11th M. M. A. Akanbi Lecture

The Faculty of law, University of Ilorin on 24th April, 2019 hosted a public lecture themed “legal ethics and professionalism in Nigeria” in his honour of Justice M.M Akanbi

According to Prof. Abdulmumini A. Oba in his welcome address, Nigeria adopted the common law system but does not follow the ethics of the legal profession to the core. “There is a Nigerian factor in everything.” He said.

The guest lecturer, Justice Amina Augie, JSC began the lecture with a definition of ethics. In her view, ethics is the branch of philosophy which is considered good or bad, it is the moral principles which concerns how people make decisions in their lives. The principles of ethics include nobility, accountability, honesty, honour, trust truth, openness, resilience, competence and diligence. She made reference to the work of James Munange Ogoola, “ETHICS: The heart and soul of the legal profession”.

The guest lecturer made apt emphasizes on integrity being the very breath of justice.
The code of conduct for Legal Practitioners in Nigeria is contained in the Rules of Professional conduct 2007 and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee is charged with the duty of ensuring compliance with the RPC. She concluded by saying that ethics is central to the spirit of the Legal Profession.

Goodwill messages were made by Hon Justice S.D Kawu, Chief Justice Kwara State, Prof. A. Popoola, Hon. Justice Bayo Taiwo, Prof. M.M. Akanbi, Alhaji Yekeen Odogun.

Presentation of gift on behalf of the Faculty of Law was presented by Prof. N. M Abdulraheem.

Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Ibrahim Yusuf Arowosaye and the closing prayer by Dr. Mrs. Niyi Gafar as attendees marched out for the photograph session.
