The Chairman of the Unilorin Corporate Affairs Commission, Jelil Ojuade while giving a rundown of the radio station’s achievements during his welcome speech affirmed that the Radio Station which operates 24 hours is the most trusted station which answers to no political authority – confirmed by the National Broadcasting Commission. Ojuade stated that Unilorin 89.3FM was the first radio station to change the traditional name of radio “asoromagbesi” as the station has enhanced various feedback mechanisms which include and are not limited to phone calls, texts, etc.

He explained in detail how so much havoc can be done with the media and also how much good can be done through the media. He further advised that the media should “be accountable to the people, not to themselves or the government.”

As the keynote speaker at the event, the Head of the Mass Communication Department, University of Ilorin, Dr. L.K Mustapha, emphasized the power of the media and how the radio especially is the easiest medium for anyone regardless of socio-economic capabilities to have access to. His speech-themed Paradoxes of Radio medium for National unity and security touched the effectiveness of the radio medium in ensuring National unity and security if journalism is practiced professionally and yellow journalism is curbed. “Media has the power to prevent and cause a crisis…” he said.
