Unilorin League: Skillz, Aztec record wins as defending champions fell to Zeus FC

Unilorin league is one of the most exciting leagues where students of the University of Ilorin come to display their talents, it serves as a ground for individuals to sharpen their skills in Football.

Season 5.0 of the Unilorin league for 2021 is under the leadership of the Students Union Sports Secretary, Afolayan Toyosi Abraham (a.k.a Phenomena). In his words, he assured that the league shall be based on fairness and justice while adding that all teams will be recognised come the end of the season.

The Unilorin League of season 5.0 is taking an abridged format consisting of two groups with Six Teams from each Group while the top two teams from each group would qualify to play in the super 4 stages.

University of Ilorin league Season 5.0 started on Friday, 27th of August 2021 underway with an opening match involving the defending champions, City Boys against Zeusadoe FC ending the match on 0 – 1.

Saturday’s early kick-off match was between  Blazing Stars and the 2018 League Champions  Marine FC. Just twelve minutes after the duel Blazing stars team was awarded a penalty of which Jimoh converted to give Blazing one-nil over their opponents. Meanwhile, Marine FC equalized through Musty’s twelve minutes goal after the second-half restart. The game ended in a tie of 1-1.

It was a wake-up play from the Aztech FC that finished at the bottom two last season as they recorded a 2-1 win against Jad FC who marginally missed out in qualifying for the Super 4. It was a brilliant change from  Aztec FC as their striker  Dammy shows classic display all through the game with a brace against their host.

Aztec FC went in front through Dammy in the seventh minute but Stephen scores nine minutes later for Jad FC  while the latter scored in the 69th minute which eventually serves as the match-winning goal for Aztec FC, the results which put them top of the login group A after the first round of matches. The match ended in an away win for Aztec with a 2-1 scoreline.

Skillz FC had to come from behind to claim three points against visiting Real Eagles courtesy of goals from Bowale and a brace from Sokoya one in each half that ensures last season’s semi-finalist, Skillz FC goes top of group B. Real Eagles only consolation goal was scored by Todimu in the ninth minutes and the results confirm them as the rock bottom side after the first round of matches in group B

It was a sunny day on Sunday as  All-stars FC clashes with Emirates United. Emirates United with the thought to have earned all three points were put to amazement when Adepoju Micheal of All-stars strikes first to give All-stars an early ten minutes goal over Emirates United. With just seven minutes left to play, Emirates United drew leveled through John in the 83rd minutes to ensure both sides share the spoils with the scoreline tied at 1-1.

H-High FC begins their 2021 league campaign by staging a comeback win in a thrilling match against Leeds United that produces a mouthwatering moment during and after the match. Leeds United had earlier taken the lead through Bibest 9th minutes strike only for Dembele to scored at either side of the half to help 2019 champions, H-HIGH Fc records a win over hard-fighting Leeds United.

H-High’s A.Sidiq becomes the first player to receive a Red Card of the season after two yellow cards during the match against Leeds United with ten minutes left to play but they held on to win by 2-1. while after the Match, Centre Referee Ekun Shamsudeen dish out a straight Red card to Kaffo of Leeds United for Foul language used against the Referee.

Dembele’s Outstanding Performance earn him a place in the team of the week charts while Oluwatosin Shadrack’s Skillz Fc players had the most field in players for the selected XI.

League Matches continue in week 2 at the weekend while going forward some fixtures shall be played during the week and weekends depending on the best convenient dates to be decided by the League Board Committee.

Teams that would emerge as the league winner, Second and Third place teams have been assured of rewards in cash, medals, awards, and a host of others.
