Unilorin lecturer bags Gani Fawehinmi Impact Award

A lecturer in the department of mass communication, University of Ilorin, Dr. Kehinde Khadijat Kadiri has been awarded an outstanding impact personality of the year 2019 at the Gani Fawehinmi Impact and integrity awards held in Radisson Blu hotel in Lagos.

The award ceremony organised in honour of Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN by Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation to celebrate his exemplary personality has three categories of nomination which are outstanding integrity award, outstanding impact award and whistleblower award.

Dr. Kadiri, a senior lecturer who is a nominee of the outstanding impact award alongside Pastor Tony Rapu and Imam Abdullahi Abubakar emerged the winner for this year award.

Kadiri, who is the executive director of the Grassroots Aid initiative (TGAI) has through her non-governmental organisation facilitated lots of intervention programmes for five states in Nigeria namely, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos and Osun respectively.

The NGO focuses on quality education, gender equality, drinkable water, access to quality health, digital skill training, women empowerment and provision of scholarship for students and inhabitants of underserved rural communities across Nigeria.

In her words, Dr. Kadiri said “I’m grateful to God for the opportunity given to me and a big thank you also goes to my team of volunteers without which I won’t be able to do anything. I will also like to greatly appreciate our donors and supporters of the brand TGAI for all their unflinching support for our various projects.”

She further appreciated the organisers of the event saying “a big thank you also to the organisers of this laudable program and TGAI as a brand as always exemplifies the persona of Chief Gani Fawehinmi in the area of truth, honesty, impact and integrity in all of our programmes, we would continue to uphold that in subsequent programs.”

At the event, issues of political and national interest were parts of the highpoints with notable guests intro and retrospectively analysing issues during the time of Chief Gani Fawehinmi and his likely reactions to current happenings in the country.

Other winners in other categories of the awards include a Nigerian Air force officer Umar Bashir who won the integrity award and Murtala Aliyu Ibrahim who emerged the winner of the whistle blower award.

Notable guests present include the publisher of Premium Times, Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi among other Senior advocate of Nigeria who were Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s mates and mentees.
