“Fact-checking is done by journalists because society depends on them for accurate and detailed information.” This qoute amongst others was a take-home of the participants of a training on fact-checking held recently at mass communication department, Unilorin.

Department of Mass communication, university of Ilorin, in collaboration with Media Advocacy and Technology Centre (MATEC), on Thursday 13 of November, held a training for the students of mass communication in Kwara on the concept of fact-checking in journalism.

The programme which was held at Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences Lecture Theatre (CISLT) had in attendance students from other tertiary institutions across the state, prominent of which are students from the Summit University, Kwara State Polytechnic and National Open University.

According to the organiser and founder of MATEC, Mr Musa Aliu, fact checking is described as a series of system and process applicable in the process of gathering information for public consumption. He further likened fact-checking to investigative journalism, saying the two are intertwined.

In his lecture, a member of the organisation, Mr Kayode Ishola gave examples of the existing fact-checking platforms; he highlighted platforms like Amnesty International YouTube channel, Dubawa, Dataview, Tineye and many more as the existence platforms on fact-checking mission which one could be modelled after.

Amongst the dignitaries that at the event was Chief Raheem Adedoyin, former commissioner for education and former commissioner for information in Kwara State. In his address, Chief Adedoyin urged students to study hard in the aspect of fact-cheking in journalism. He appreciated the organisers for the opportunity given to the students to learn on the important aspect of journalism, the aspect of fact-checking.

Also the Head of Department of Mass communication, Mr Kayode Lambe Mustapha was part of the dignitaries at the event. He appreciated the organisers and the students populace.
