Unilorin mathematics dept emerge best in North Central

The National Association of Mathematical Science Students of Nigeria (NAMSSN), University of Ilorin chapter, has emerged overall winner at the just concluded North Central Zone Mathematics Quiz Competition held at Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger state.

The brain teasing competition of the annual NAMSSN Conference which took place between 16th and 20th of April, 2019 had participants drawn from six states of the zone including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Receiving the trophy from the NAMSSN at the Head of the Department of Mathematics office for onward presentation to the University authority on Thursday (April 25, 2019), the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Professor F.A. Adekola congratulated the representatives of the University of Ilorin at the competition for doing the University proud with their brilliant performance.

Adekola who was elated with the achievement recorded by the students of mathematics department said the University authority is pleased with the thrilling academic performance of her students at the tournament.

“We are not surprised that the Mathematics Department won the trophy at the North central quiz competition, because the department has consistently produced first class students year in year out. This is not the first time the department will win gold medals for the University. Our hope and prayer is that the department will come first in the entire country and be the best maths department in Nigeria” Professor Adekola said.

He advised the students to continue to remain focused and be dedicated to their studies so as to become notable figures in the society after their graduation.

Also speaking, the Head of Department of Mathematics, Professor R.B. Adeniyi thanked God that the students of the Department recorded such a giant stride achievement during his tenure as the head of the Department.

Professor Adeniyi said the department has been making waves in terms of brilliant performance both in academics and other extra curricular activities.

“This Department has on annual basis produced high rated quality students in terms of academic and even extra curricular activities that is why the Head of Department office is flooded with series of trophies and medals received by our students” he said.

In his reaction, the President of NAMSSN who is also the leader of the 10 participants that represented the University of Ilorin at the tournament, Ajetunmobi Afeez thanked God for giving them the opportunity to be good ambassadors of the Unilorin at competition.

The departmental president, in person of Ajetumobi Afeez, said University of Ilorin came first in the Quiz competition while the host University, Federal University of Technology Minna, (FUT Minna) came second.

The NAMSSN president added that the tournament also featured football competition among the participating Universities where University of Ilorin and Ibraheem Badamosi Babangida University, Lapai locked horns at the final.

He said University of Ilorin came second with IBB University emerging the first position in the soccer game.
Present at the presentation of the trophy at HOD office included Professor K. Rauf, Dr Olubunmi Fadipe-Joseph, Dr O.A. Uwaheren, Dr K.A. Bello staff Patron, Dr E.O Titiloye and Mrs Aderibigbe.

The ten participants at this year edition of NAMSSN Conference from Unilorin contingent include Ajetunmobi Afeez Tunde (NAMSSN President), Sanni Azeez Olawale General Secretary, Okunola Toluwani Deborah, Akeju James Ayomikunle,
Yahaya Mukthar, Morakinyo Victor Oluwaseun, Adesugba Joshua Oluwafemi, Taliat Habib Kolapo,
Jesukunle Esther Abisola, and Okubanjo Qudus Adeniyi.
