Yesterday February 1st, the University of Ilorin was well represented at the just concluded International Campus Journalism Conference (ICJC), held at Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile-Ife.
The conference which saw the convergence of student journalists across the country was organised by the OAU chapter of the Nigerian Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ), Association of Campus Journalists, ACJ.
Aside the conspicuous presence of UNILORIN students at the conference, A student of the institution, Agbaje Ayomide also won the Grand Prize in an Essay writing contest powered by Opera News Hub, a co-sponsor of the conference.
Agbaje, a student journalist with UCJ-UNILORIN, was amidst over fifty other contestants declared champion of the writing challenge with the grand sum of N50,000 cash prize.
Meanwhile, Peter Ayebamiji from the host university, OAU, and his Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) counterpart, who currently is also the Publicity Officer of NUCJ, Samuel Ajala cliched the first and second positions, with 30,000 and 20,000 prize tags, respectively.
Awarding the winners, a chief editor with Opera News Hub, Mr Michael Abimbola, applauded the winners for their swiftness coupled with adroitness as according to him, the time frame for the contest was enough to discourage them. He however further encouraged them to do more.
The announcement and awarding of the contest winners were amidst series of lectures and panel sessions that featured personalities in the realms of Journalism, and social activism.
Amongst the media personalities at the conference were a Senior Editor from The Nation newspapers, Mr Oguntola Sunday; Mr Michael Olatunbosun from Splash FM, Mr Shitta Ibrahim from TVC and Mr Lukman Fasasi.
Also in attendance was a senior legal adviser at SERAP, Ms Joke Tekumo.
ICJC is an annual conference of all student journalists across the country and beyond. It sees to the yearly convergence of every chapter under NUCJ at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The theme tag for this year’s conference was “Press Freedom: Journalism under General Muhammadu Buhari”.
